EARLY WORK.
Landscapes, paisajes
by Juan Bernal
I was born in Medellin, Colombia and raised on a farm in Envigado, a nearby town, where I lived until I was 12 years old. This farm was my maternal grandmother’s botanical garden, she traveled a lot, always bringing seeds from her trips, consequently there was a huge variety of ornamental, fruit-bearing trees and flowering plants. Intermingled with the trees, taking advantage of their shade were her favorite plants: the orchids of which she had hundreds of native and exotic species. They were also my favorite, not only for their spectacular designs and color patterns with mysterious similarities with insects, but their unique scents and properties.
Some of my most cherished memories come from the early morning, watching the fog rise as the sun warmed the land. I remember - and miss - the smell of wet soil and the perfume of the mountains, enhanced by the vibrant hues of the flowers. I also long for the scent of the stables, the combination of the smells: horse manure, hay, the fresh cut grass and the sugar cane used to feed the cattle and the horses.
These are the origins of my love for Mother Nature and the reason why my work is about its beauty and the importance of preserving the enviroment.
